The Diversity Book Group meets once a month on Friday evenings for a potluck dinner and discussion of a variety of books on diverse topics, both fiction and non-fiction.
The Diversity Book Group is a fun, social way to open a dialogue on women, diversity, and change. The branch's diversity book group uses AAUW's Adelante! Book Club selections and themes whenever practical (i.e. local library availability) and encourages members to participate. We've read about a variety of ethnic groups, cultures, lifestyles and challenges (societal, physical and mental). We read both fiction and nonfiction. Some of the books read and discussed are The Kite Runner, Middlesex, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Nickel and Dimed: On (not) Getting by in America, and My Forbidden Face.
Although some join us after the meal, we've combined our discussions with a potluck dinner on the third Friday (usually) of the month. When appropriate, some of us bring food associated in the area of the month's book. Either prepared by us or bought. Although not all our selections come from the Adelante! list, their selections can be found on http://aauw.org/connect/adelante/index.cfm.
