Educational Partnership Committee
At our last meeting we prepared the Nomination packets to be delivered to the principals of all the schools, which kicks off our Tech Trek process. We will go to 16 schools again this year, in 3 school districts.
SCHOOL BUDDIES—ATTENTION! At our next meeting on Feb. 8 we will be making up the packets to give to the girls nominated at each school. BE THERE TO PICK UP YOUR PACKETS, which need to be delivered to the schools between February 9 and 17. Ask the principal’s office to schedule a meeting with all the girls—watch out for holidays. If you cannot be at the meeting, we can make alternate arrangements. WE STILL NEED a few more SCHOOL BUDDIES so let us know ASAP if you can help us!
CAN YOU BE A READER FOR TECH TREK THIS YEAR? E-mail or phone me if you can assist. Your efforts will be needed between March 14th – 22nd. We need 3 readers for each school to read the essays, questionnaires and teacher nominations for each nominee, coming up with rankings (we show you how to do this). This takes perhaps 45 minutes, and can be done at your convenience inside our time frame. You will have to pick up your Reader materials at our MARCH 14 meeting, or a make other arrangements for pick up/delivery. Thanks to all who have volunteered so far!

One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
The story follows 100 years in the life of Macondo, a village founded by Jose Arcadio Buendiaand occupied by his descendants, all sporting variations on their progenitor's name. The women struggle to remain grounded even as their men-folk build castles in the air. If it is possible for a novel to be highly comic and deeply tragic at the same time, then One Hundred Years of Solitude does the trick. Civil war rages throughout, hearts break, dreams shatter, and lives are lost, yet the effect is literary pentimento, with sorrow's outlines bleeding through the vibrant colors of García Márquez's magical realism. With this novel García Márquez introduced Latin American literature to a world-wide readership. Translated into more than two dozen languages, his brilliant novel of love and loss in Macondo stands at the apex of 20th-century literature.

Rise and Shine by Anna Quindlen
This popular author writes a superb novel about two sisters, the true meaning of success, and the qualities in life that matter most.
It’s an otherwise ordinary Monday when Meghan Fitzmaurice’s perfect life hits a wall. A household name as the host of Rise and Shine, the country’s highest-rated morning talk show, Meghan cuts to a commercial break–but not before she mutters two forbidden words into her open mike.
In an instant, it’s the end of an era, not only for Meghan, who is unaccustomed to dealing with adversity, but also for her younger sister, Bridget, a social worker in the Bronx who has always lived in Meghan’s long shadow. The effect of Meghan’s on-air truth telling reverberates through both their lives, affecting Meghan’s son, husband, friends, and fans, as well as Bridget’s perception of her sister, their complex childhood, and herself. What follows is a story about how, in very different ways, the Fitzmaurice women adapt, survive, and manage to bring the whole teeming world of New York to heel by dint of their smart mouths, quick wits, and the powerful connection between them that even the worst tragedy cannot shatter.
